Snow Report
Bluebird skies all week long and dark cold nights. We have not picked up any new snow this week, but the cold temps have held on to what we already have. We currently have 20 inches of snow pack in the woods. Snow Depth Map Click Here
Snowmobile Trail Report
Rockwood is currently on a regular grooming schedule of 4-5 nights a week. Typically this is Friday, Saturday, and 2-3 nights during the week. We have a great solid base, but please watch your speed as the corners might be icey.. High spots are starting to show in wooded sections but these are few and far between. Shallow snow depth creates many off trail opportunities. This is a great time of year to explore some of those unplowed logging roads you always wondered where they went too and never stopped to see. So get out the DeLorme Atlas and plan your loop. If you have too turn around, so what. You might just find a fresh moose antler shed! For those looking for deep powder, we have that too! Steve is happy to share GPS maps of his favorite boondocking spots. This is some video footage of Steve's first ride of the season.Click Here.
Ice Report
The ice on Moosehead has varied depths. The lake always freezes in coves first. Here in the narrows of Rockwood it measures 12 inches. Ice fishing is well underway and several shacks are starting to appear near Rockwood's Public Landing at Mt. Kineo. ALL TRAILS FROM ROCKWOOD TO MT KINEO HAVE BEEN MARKED AND ARE SAFE FOR CROSSING. This includes the trail from The Birches Resort, Rockwood's Public Landing, The Moon Trail and The Cottage trail. Please check with locals before going on any body of water and when in doubt, stay on the marked trails. The surface is glare ice with patches of snow.
Ski Report
Cross Country ski trails are all open and ready for your winter adventure. We have maps here in the office and would be happy to help you plan your trip.
Wildlife Report
Deer are herding up and can be seen regularly at camp. You can see them on our webcam in the morning and a few hours before dark so check back. We have one mother with two young ones. River otters are in front of the cabins, playing on the ice and Maynard's snow. Bald Eagles fly over daily looking for a meal. Drive with caution along our Route 6/15, especially at night. Maine treats the road with calcium chloride, a chemical combination that moose crave. Sometimes you even see them knelt over licking the pavement!
For those that make a visit to Gray Ghost Camps an annual affair, we look forward to seeing you soon. For anyone planning on a very first visit to our camp, we hope that we exceed your expectations. Try us once and we are sure that you will be back again.
